The study uses daily EUR interest rate data from 2000 to 2007 and identifies the primary components of interest-rate movements, commonly known as "shift," "twist," and "butterfly." These components explain the majority of the variance in interest-rate changes and can be utilized to simplify the dimensionality of models.

The paper demonstrates that these principal components can significantly speed up the VaR calculations for portfolios containing complex financial instruments, such as callable swaps and digital range accruals, without compromising accuracy. The analysis shows that using just a few principal components can yield results with errors typically within a few basis points compared to a full-scale brute-force approach.
